We are indebted to Defoe for many things besides the storyof Robinson Crusoe. While that may be the best known ofthe products of his brain, it has not produced the materialadvantages to us that some of his other things have. Forinstance, it was he who first advocated the establishment ofacademies for women. In his day, a great many men did notbelieve in educating women, just as many men to-day do notbelieve that women should be allowed to vote.
