Summary

Description
English: This is a qualitative schematic meant to explain the additional crack stability inherent to materials with rising R-curves. The green curve depicts a material's rising crack growth resistance curve in some local region. Consider two different cracks with applied crack driving force curves G1(a) and G2(a). Initially, both are unstable as they exceed the crack growth resistance curve by an infinitesimal amount. Crack 1 continues to propagate to failure while crack 2 arrests after some short distance.
