Summary
[edit]Description | Picture of Alma Thomas' painting Resurrection (1966) at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., in 2023. A square abstract painting hangs on a gallery wall, composed of irregular, organic-looking rectangular brushstrokes arranged like tiles in over a dozen concentric circles growing in size from the center of the painting, with slivers of white canvas visible throughout the painting. The largest circles furthest from the center are colored yellow, forming the background of the painting; increasingly smaller circles of orange, several shades of red, purple, blue, and green fill in the painting toward the center. The very center of the painting is an irregular circle of light green, the only portion of the work not rendered in the overall brushstroke pattern. |
