Reflectron ion mirror schematic. Two ions with the same mass and charge but one with higher energy (red) are accelerated into a field-free drift region. The ions are reflected by an electrostatic potential in the ion mirror. The higher energy ion takes a longer path through the reflection and is behind the lower energy ion (blue) at the exit. The detector is placed at the point where the higher energy ion overtakes the lower energy ion for energy focusing.
