[edit]| Description | Picture of Sam Gilliam's painting Red Petals (1967) at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., in 2022. An abstract painting on a slightly irregular square canvas, dominated by a central fluid-like field of swirling brownish red paint that transitions from splotchier cherry red at the bottom to a smoother section of burnt orange at the top. Two dark splotches are situated near the center of the work where the artist poured paint and allowed it to pool and darken before adding flecks of brighter red pigment to their centers. The central field of red paint dissipates toward the left and right, with soft blues, purples, and yellows emerging from underneath on the left edge, and dark brown tones covering overtop the red on the right edge. The two central splotches have soft circular halos of pigment radiating around them like waves into the other layers of color - the halo around the left splotch is darker, while the halo around the right splotch is a lighter, almost gray tone. There is a slight haze or sheen over the entire work and the paint has a translucent quality, mixing and layering while still allowing the layers underneath to be visible. The surface of the painting appears smooth, without any visible texture of physical paint build-up, but the layers of color and traces of movement from the fluid paint running over the canvas make the expanse of color appear multidimensional. |
