English: At the end of 1912, the Alishan Forest Railway was launched, followed by the develpoment of Basianshan and Taipingshan in 1915. The timber industry in the eastern part of the island was started in 1918 by the private sector, and was not developed on a larger scale until the 1930s. During the Japanese era, Alishan, Basianshan and Taipingshan were collectively known as the "Three Major Government Operated Forest Tree Faems".In the east, Haulien's Lintianshan, Mugushan (Halun), and Taroko (Lanshan) forests had large scale forest railways, and all of them were connected to the railways managed by the Ministry of Railways in the plains.
