Description
English: This watercolour painting by William Armstrong (1822–1914) depicts the railway bridge (Breslau Bridge) over the Grand River near Breslau, Ontario, Canada. Wedge-shaped blocks at the foot of the bridge piers (used for icebreaking during winter) are visible. Two canoes are visible near the river, as well as a number of human figures on and around the bridge. Armstrong was a railway engineer, artist, draughtsman, and photographer who worked for the Grand Trunk Railway early in his career, with a number of his works depicting railway scenes and activities. He also prominently featured colonial and First Nations themes, depicting a changing Canadian landscape and society of railways and industry meeting with the natural environment and with indigenous peoples.
