English: Diagram of barrel and breech of British RBL 12 pounder 8 cwt field gun.

This shows the "New Model" with the short 72-inch barrel.

  • A : Barrel inner tube : originally of wrought-iron; made of steel in later 72-inch barrels.
  • B, C, D : wrough-iron coils
  • E : Tappet-ring
  • L : Lever-ring
  • P : Breech-piece : forging of wrought-iron
  • S : Breech-screw
  • T : Trunnion ring
  • V : Vent-piece incorporating a right-angled vent.
  • a : Powder chamber
  • b : Shot chamber
  • c : Grip : narrowing of bore to force lead coating on projectile to engage with rifling grooves
