Notes The following information was supplied by the quiltmaker: If your quilt is based on a traditional pattern or an earlier quilt, what is the name of the pattern? Where did you learn the pattern? "A quilt block drafting class - 'Patchwork Patterns', 'Medallion Quilts', and 'The Quilter's Album of Blocks and Borders' all by Jinny Beyer were very beneficial in designing this quilt. Jinny Beyer is my quilting idol. I've always been very intrigued by mariner compasses." Other techniques used include: "Lots of special cutting and a lot of small pieces. Sample blocks are 8 inches." How did you choose the materials used in your quilt? "I chose a coordinating border stripe and floral in wine and navy to go with colors in my living room. I special cut the border stripe and floral to create special effects within the sampler blocks and borders. I enjoy working with border stripes they are challenging to me." How long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? "For approximately 25 years I have been very involved in quilting. I started piecing my first quilt (38 yrs ago) at the age of 13, learning from my maternal grandmother. Basically, I taught myself to quilt after quilting became so popular in later years. I have taken classes to perfect my work and learn new techniques. I have also gained a lot of knowledge from quilt books and magazines." What was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? "Entering Wind Rose of Time was a personal goal for me. It is an original design and my first medallion design. It was a real challenge to draft this quilt and then have all the pieces fit together perfectly. Other than a small local competition of scrap quilts (which I placed 1st) this is my only entry in competition." Has being a winner in the Land's End contest made a difference in your life? Has it changed the way you look at your work as a quilt maker? "Yes, it has built my confidence and has helped me view my work with a lot of pride. The local newspaper did an article on me and my quilt after the contest. Family and friends were very proud. Everyone is very aware now, of my love of quilting."
