Quarry Tunnel, south portal A Class 319 Bedford - Brighton "Thameslink" working (actually now operated by First Capital Connect, but still always thought of as "Thameslink"), just emerged from Quarry Tunnel on the "Quarry Line". This is the name given to the line opened in 1899 by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway, bypassing the original line through Merstham and Redhill owned by the South Eastern Railway. The Quarry Line now serves as the fast lines from London Bridge/Victoria to Gatwick Airport and Brighton.
