A chart showing 'file size vs quality setting' of a jpeg image created in Adobe Photoshop. As can be seen from the chart, the file size grows exponentially as quality improves.

Save for web (SFW) jpg images generally have a smaller file size than standard jpg until jpg quality = 7 and SFW = 67, when SFW becomes larger in size. This continues until jpg = 11 and SFW = 92 when they are roughly equal and then by jpg =12 SFW = 100, jpg is again the larger. Interestingly jpg 6 quality produced a larger file size then jpg 7 quality.

The scene was carefully chosen to include high detail areas, such as grass and sand, which tend to increase file size, as well as a large amount of graduated sky which is an area which typically shows the most obvious effects of jpeg compression.

The resulting image was saved as jpg 12 quality to minimize any effect this might have on the included images. (I could have saved in uncompressed PNG but I remember when I was on dialup...).
