Matthew Smith Anderson studies history at the University of Edinburgh, where his course was interrupted by war service in the Royal Air Force. He returned to graduate in 1948 ant to teach briefly at Edinburgh University before coming south. He was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Political History at LSE under L.G. Robinson when there were no departments in the School. In due course the Department of International History was formed in the 1950s… For several decades he was an anchor-man, teaching a wide range of 18th and 19th century European and Asian History courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He was a convenor in the years 1973-76 and did a full stint of teaching right up to his retirement, always noted for his caring and conscientious approach to his profession…
