Summary

Description
English: This figure illustrates the worksflow of working with caged compounds inside living cells. First, a protection group is (chemically) added to the compound of interest. This protected compound is then added to the cells (sometimes special care has to be taken for making sure it crosses the plasma membrane). Finally, the protection group is removed by a flash of light (usually a laser line on the microscope). The compound is now in its active configuration and its effect on cellular signalling can be observed
