Summary

Description
English: Preston Station, East Lancashire platforms.
View NW, to Platforms 10 - 13 from what is, in 2010, East Cliff, with the main station behind. These platforms constituted the ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire (L&Y) section of this very busy junction station, serving the L&Y lines from the Blackburn direction, also from Liverpool Exchange and from Southport (until 7/9/64) Butler Street Goods adjoined (on the right). The lines joined with the ex-London & North Western West Coast Main Line at the north end of the main station. North of Preston station these two major systems threw off their three joint lines to Blackpool and Fleetwood. On Summer Saturdays Preston was one of the busiest stations in the country and therefore a 'Mecca' for Train-Watchers. However, the inevitable falling off in traffic as the Motorway Age ensued in the 1960s resulted in this part of Preston Station being closed to passengers on 6/5/68, completely on 4/9/72. It is now occupied by a massive car-park and Fishergate Shopping Centre. In this scene from 1959, an ex-WD 'Austerity' 2-8-0 is in the foreground, with a Stanier Class 4 2-6-4T behind it and to the left a BR Standard 2MT 2-6-0.
