Image title	I was born under that dome. Okay, not EXACTLY right at that spot, but a few blocks away. The dome from the old Saint John General Hospital was rescued from the rubble of the old building's demolition in 1995 and restored at the expense of New Brunswick scion J.K. Irving. It now stands as a reminder of the once great original regional hospital. Replaced at the end of the last century by a modern hospital complex on the outskirts of the city. I wonder how many thousands were born under that dome from 1931 until the1980s? I like J.K. Irving's explanation of why he thought it important to preserve the memory of the old General - it was important to his family for the same reason it was to so many other families in southern New Brunswick. It marked births, deaths and the many moments in between for many families of southern New Brunswick, but it also had another sentimental connection for J.K. - his wife was a nurse at the General.
