Summary

Description
English: Powderhall Refuse Depot, Broughton Road. This fine Victorian building in the Scots baronial style housed the administrative offices and stables of the Powderhall Refuse Depot. It was built in 1893 at a time when waste was collected in horse-drawn carts. St Mark's Park, which lies behind the building, originated as the dumping-ground for the incinerated ash from thousands of the city's domestic coal fires; later flattened and sowed with grass. During the early years of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in the 1950s, the stables accommodated the horses of the Household Cavalry and La Garde républicaine who were billeted nearby 1343815.
