It can clearly be seen that the total world population was steadily rising during the period 1000AD to around 1700AD, though with major disruption from outbreaks of plague (most notably the Black Death from 1350 AD - 1400 AD). Please see notes regarding the source data and method used for plotting the resulting population dips caused by both the Black Death and later plagues
Population grew at a faster rate from about 1700AD onwards, which coincided with the start of the Industrial Revolution There was then a sharp increase from the beginning of the 20th century followed by a very dramatic acceleration in population growth from the middle of the 20th century (around 1950) onwards.
At over 6.7 billion (see US Census data) the World Population is approximately 3 times higher in 2009 than it was at approximately 2.3 billion or less(historic census) in 1939, despite the appalling loss of life in World War II (an upper estimate of which is some 72 million).
This graph image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.
It is recommended to name the SVG file “Poulation-since-1000AD.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
This graph image was uploaded in the JPEG format even though it consists of non-photographic data. This information could be stored more efficiently or accurately in the PNG or SVG format. If possible, please upload a PNG or SVG version of this image without compression artifacts, derived from a non-JPEG source (or with existing artifacts removed). After doing so, please tag the JPEG version with {{Superseded|NewImage.ext}} and remove this tag. This tag should not be applied to photographs or scans. If this image is a diagram or other image suitable for vectorisation, please tag this image with {{Convert to SVG}} instead of {{BadJPEG}}. If not suitable for vectorisation, use {{Convert to PNG}}. For more information, see {{BadJPEG}}.
