Summary
DescriptionPost No Bills.jpg |
Wondering if this is the earliest sighting of a "Post No Bills" warning in our photos (in the archway at the right - no. 18). This is Shop Street, Galway obviously bathed in glorious sunshine, with a horse-drawn tram that's a little full, to say the least. Also delighted to spot the beautifully dressed woman with her bicycle. Not too sure about date, so hopefully there are some clues in this shot to help us... This tram leaves us between 1879 and 1918, from <a href="photos/gnmcauley/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Niall McAuley's</a> link about the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galway_and_Salthill_Tramway" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Galway and Salthill Tramway Company</a>. And Niall also points out that if the photographer had turned left (and gone through a hole in the space-time continuum!), then he would have seen <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland/7092824093/" target="_blank">this view</a>. Thanks to <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mogey/" target="_blank">mogey</a> for providing us with a <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=shop+st+galway,+Ireland&hl=en&ll=53.272425,-9.053249&spn=0.004042,0.011362&sll=51.918795,-9.672035&sspn=0.004195,0.011362&t=h&hnear=Shop+St,+Galway,+County+Galway,+Ireland&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.272513,-9.053149&panoid=67CHsakg62nDBk63lCetqg&cbp=12,49.43,,0,-2.04" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Street View</a> of this now pedestrianised street. Right, based on the comments below from <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley/" target="_blank">Niall McAuley</a>, <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/79549245@N06/" target="_blank">DannyM8</a>, <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/23885771@N03/" target="_blank">RETRO STU</a> and <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/blackpoolbeach/" target="_blank">blackpoolbeach</a>, we're going to go mad altogether and posit 1910 as a date for this one! Date: Circa 1910 NLI Ref.: <a href="http://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000333506" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">L_CAB_06802</a> |
