В центре сидит глава семейства Леонтий (Луи Жюль) Бенуа —

повар-кондитер герцога Монморанси, переселившийся в Россию и ставший придворным метрдотелем. Рядом — его жена Екатерина Андреевна. Их дети (по старшинству) — Жаннет, Михаил (в кадетской форме), Леонтий, Александрина, Елизавета, Елена, Николай и Франсуа. А.Н. Бенуа вспоминал: „Вся семья дедушки изображена целиком на картине, писанной каким-то „другом дома" по фамилии, если я не ошибаюсь, Оливье. Это совершенно любительское произведение, над которым в былое время принято было у нас потешаться... досталось по мне. Но как раз любительский характер этой картины в последующие годы (когда начался культ всякого примитивизма в искусстве, а строгие академические заветы стали постепенно забываться) — возбуждал восторги моих гостей. Иные из них ничего другого на стенах не удостаивали внимания, кроме этого портрета ..."
