Portrait of Henry, Lord Drumlanrig (1722-1754)

half length, wearing a cream jacket and a white necktie

oil on canvas, in a painted oval

69 by 56 cm., 27¼ by 22 in.

The sitter was the eldest son of Charles, 3rd Duke of Queensberry and his wife, Catherine Hyde. On 24th July 1754 he was married to Elizabeth Hope, daughter of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun. A similar portrait hangs at Douglas Castle. He died only three months later.

The present portrait belonged to James Veitch, an influential judge and a popular member of Edinburgh legal circles. He had close connections with the 3rd Duke of Queensberry, who in 1755 brought him in as an M.P. for Dumfriesshire, which was a constituency dominated by the Queensberry family.
