This head and shoulders study shows the sitter wearing the scarlet uniform with gold epaulettes and aiguillettes of a lieutenant general, and the badge and star of a Knight Commander of the Bath. This is one of 13 portrait studies painted by the artist from life, for his large painting 'Battle of Waterloo', now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
