English: The Metropolitan Borough of Poplar was formed in 1900. Poplar Borough Council Coat of Arms, adopted a Common Seal based on the badge designed for the Poplar Board of Works established in 1855, comprising the seals of the parishes of Poplar, Bromley, and Bow, which became the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar.
The gateway represents the Hibbert Gate of the West India Import Dock, the sailing ship (believed to be the Hibbert) refers to the parish of All Saints and to Poplar's associations with shipbuilding and the sea.
The monk's was the seal of the parish of Bromley St. Leonard. Commemorating the Benedictine Priory dedicated to St. Leonard founded in the 10th or 11th century which stood on the banks of the River Lea until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the late 1530s.
The bows and bridge on the Bow shield refers to the bow-shaped bridge over the River Lea.
