Italiano: «Con questo dipinto, esposto a Venezia nel 1853, l'artista affrontava per la prima volta il soggetto storico d'ispirazione letteraria, caro alla cultura romantica. Il tema, tratto dal poemetto colmo di suggestioni medievaleggianti di Bartolomeo Sestini che tanto successo ebbe nel primo Ottocento, si sofferma su un episodio trascurato dai pittori, quello del mesto viaggio della Pia verso la sua prigione maremmana. Le figure dei due viaggiatori, minuziosamente descritte, si stagliano sul paesaggio del litorale toscano, reso cupo e malinconico dalla giornata nuvolosa in patetica armonia con lo stato d'animo della giovane sposa desolata. Anche gli animali riflettono i sentimenti dei protagonisti, focoso e irruento l'uno, remissivo e al passo quello della Pia.» (Vedi fonte, p. 232)
