Summary

Description
English: Split rail fences, also known as "snake" fences, were used by 19th-century settlers in southern Grey County, Ontario, where supplies of cedar logs from wetlands was plentiful. This type of construction needed no bailing wire, nails or other fasteners. The stability of the design, no metal to corrode and the natural rot-resistance of the cedar rails resulted in long-lasting fences. Some fences on farms near Flesherton, Ontario date back to the 19th century.
