Summary

Description

A 2004 scan of a 1902 photograph of a 6-ton Millstone Grit memorial stone, in 2 pieces, being transported through Holcombe village, Greater Manchester, England, in 1902. It was to be dragged up Holcombe Hill by 14 horses that day, to be installed in place of an ancient wayside cross known as "Pilgrim's Cross, Holcombe Moor", which had been destroyed or lost by 1901.

The 2004 scan of the original is in the possession of Ramsbottom Heritage Society, with the following caption: "Pilgrims Cross (replacement) being taken from Fletcher Bank Quarry 24.5.1902, by Higher House, Moor Road, Holcombe". The original print is in Bury Archive.

Points of interest
  • Zooming in, you can glimpse some of the 14 horses, at the front of the cart.
  • The heavy-duty cart probably belongs to the quarry company.
  • The cartwheels are chocked so that it does not run backwards, and it is facing uphill towards the moor. In front of the cart, the harnesses of the horses are being readjusted for the hill journey.
  • Reverend Henry Dowsett took a lot of the existing photographs of this subject and event. Because he is not prominent in this picture, it is possible that he took this photograph too.
  • Although this was a Saturday, it was also Queen Victoria's birthday (celebrated from 1902 as Empire Day), which may explain the Sunday best clothes worn by the group on the right.
