This public square is the major square in the Trastevere neighbourhood. The church of Santa Maria in Trastevere is one of the oldest churches in Rome. The original house-church was founded in 220 by pope Callixtus I. In 340, pope Julius I built the first large church building. In 1140 under pope Innocent II, it was demolished and rebuilt on its original foundations. It was completed in 1143 and is the building that stands today.
