English: Plump fruiting calyces of Physochlaina orientalis (M. Bieb.) G. Don (family: Solanaceae) photographed shortly before dehiscence of pyxidial capsules within (operculum, with scar left by fall of pistil, clearly visible in one of said calyces).
Cultivated plant brought into flower early in domestic conservatory. Deepening of distinct purple tinge to exteriors of calyces caused by feeding of plant with chelated iron to avoid chlorosis. (Plant not recorded in literature as being calcifuge, but seemed to thrive when dosed with a little extra iron in addition to standard N P K fertiliser).
