Summary

Description
English: The Philip Becker House, at 534 Delaware Avenue in the Allentown Historic District, Buffalo, New York. Born in Oberotterbach, Bavaria in 1830, Becker emigrated to the U.S. with his older brother at the age of seventeen, working his way up the social ladder from humble deli clerk to Buffalo's first mayor of German-American descent, an office he held from 1876-1877 and again from 1886-1889. A Republican, Becker's accomplishments as mayor include the construction of a new City and County Hall on Franklin Street (still extant as Erie County Hall) and rapid urbanization of the East Side of the city. Becker also served as president of the Buffalo German Insurance Company and delegate to the 1876 Republican National Convention. The house seen here was built in 1886 and sports an eclectic mix of architectural styles including Beaux-Arts, Queen Anne, and Second Empire. The building is now office space.
