Summary

Description
English: Petworth House in Sussex, portrait painted in about 1700, painting identified by Sir Anthony Blunt in the collection of the Duke of Rutland at Belvoir Castle. A similar image is included in Laguerre's wall-painting on the Grand Staircase at Petworth. It shows the original house re-built between 1688 and 1696 by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset (1662-1748), who inherited it from his wife. Shows evidence of French chateau style, with original central dome, now lost. Horace Walpole called it "in the style of the Tuileries". Today the roofline is lower and flat, possibly following the fire of 1714 and subsequent repairs. Statues on the top of the walls now lost and entrance front moved to rear.
