DescriptionPeterborough North geograph-2178990.jpg
English: Derby - Lowestoft holiday express approaching Peterborough North.
View NW from Spital Bridge, towards Manton, Melton Mowbray and Nottingham/Derby on the ex-Midland lines. On the right is the ex-Great Northern East Coast Main Line to Grantham and the North, with further over Spital Sidings and beyond Westwood Bridge the great New England Yard complex. (The big locomotive-coaling plant can just be distinguished, far right). Before 1959, these holiday trains to the East Coast would have run east from Manton via Saxby and the Midland & Great Northern route, but for a few more years they were diverted via Peterborough (North and East), March and Ely. Even at this relatively late date, 4F 0-6-0s were being used and this is ex-Midland No. 44013. It will hand over to an Eastern Region locomotive at Peterborough East or March - see TL1899 : Derby - Lowestoft holiday express approaching Peterborough North.
