Summary

Description
English: Photograph of the Perez Lincoln House, 123 North Street (moved from original location), Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Historic American Buildings Survey, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. The house was originally built by Joseph Andrews, Hingham's first constable and first town clerk, likely in 1640. Although now clapboarded, the house was originally of timber frame construction and was Hingham's first garrison house. It boasted massive timbers and thick log walls and was used by early settlers as a gathering spot when an alarm went out over Native American attacks. The house is likely the oldest home in Hingham, and the oldest authenticated garrison house. Joseph Andrews sold the house for a nominal fee to his son Capt. Thomas Andrews, and the home became known as the Andrews House. Following Andrews's death, the home passed into the Lincoln family, in which it was conveyed for 225 years by simple inheritance or will from one owner to another. Nine generations of the Lincoln family occupied the home.
