Summary

Description

Adult Male Jumping spider (Pelegrina pervaga)

I search the same few areas for bugs almost weekly hoping to find something new. I have almost grown accustomed to not finding anything in this one conifer-rich area but Phidippus audax females in some wood platforms, but Friday afternoon, I noticed a little form atop a log laying beneath a conifer. I approached the little mottled form hoping it would be a jumping spider - and sure enough, it was! To my delight he turned out to be an adult male of a species I have never seen.

After searching around a bit and a quick e-mail to Dr. Wayne Maddison, I discovered he was a Pelegrina pervaga - a species found in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas largely on conifers (junipers maybe?... I don't know my trees too well). Also, there currently aren't any photos of this species (except this beautiful specimen photographed by Pete Carmichael) available online as far as I can tell. Maybe I'll head out again to find some females in the same tree, photograph them, and create a wikipedia page for the species...
