Peinliches Verhör

Summary

Description
English: This engraving is one of Jan Luyken's 104 illustrations for the 1685 edition of the Martyrs Mirror by Thieleman Janszoon van Braght. It depicts Ursel (Ursula), the elderly wife of Arent van Essen, a Protestant schoolmaster of Maastricht. The couple, together with another old lady and her daughter, were tortured and beaten in an attempt to force them to renounce their faith and then burned at the stake in January 1570 by the city authorities.
