Summary

Description The Paul Robeson Theater at 40 Greene Avenue between Carlton Avenue and Adelphi Street in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City is located in a former church constructed 1833-64 in the Rundbogenstil style for the Fourth Universalist Society, and possibly designed by Rembrandt Lockwood. In 1870 it became Temple Israel, one of the first Reform Jewish congregations in Brooklyn, which used it as a synagogue until 1890, when they moved elsewhere. It then became St. Casimir's Roman Catholic Church, a Polish parish founded in 1875, and was enlarged for their needs. In 1980, the parish merged with Lady of Czestochowa in Williamsburg, and the building was purchased by Dr. Josephine English, an obstetrician and community activist, who turned it into the Fort Greene Cultural Center/Paul Robeson Theater. The building was designated a NYC landmark in October 2011; a month later part of the parapet fell down, and the owner report that she could not afford to make repairs (Sources: NYCLPC Designation Report, PRT History and NY Daily News story)
