Summary
[edit]Cropped image taken from the cover of The Saint Meets the Tiger, copyright 1981 by Charter Books. This image has been created for the purposes of character identification, specifically the character Patricia Holm. This image will be used in the article on Patricia Holm. The artist is not credited in the book. The article also contains discussion of the book illustrated. No free alternative is possible, given that a) the character has only been portrayed on screen once and b) the only other illustrations of Patricia Holm are from similar book covers or comic strips and c) the only possible alternative would be an actual drawing of the character by a Wikipedia editor which would violate the WP:NPOV rules as it would indicate the editor's own point of view as to what the character looks like as opposed to this image which was published at a time when the creator of the character, Leslie Charteris, was overseeing the publication of the Charter Books reprints of The Saint. In addition, the drawing displayed here also closely follows the description of Holm given by Charteris, which is also discussed in the article. The use of this artwork in no way affects the commercial value of the book illustrated and may in fact contribute to generating intererst in said book and in sales of other books featuring this character.
Licensing
[edit]This image is of book cover(s), and the copyright for it is most likely owned either by the artist who created the cover(s) or the publisher of the book(s). It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of book covers
qualifies as fair use under the copyright law of the United States. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, might be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information. | |
Fair use rationale
[edit]Description |
This image is being used to illustrate the article Patricia Holm and is used for informational or educational purposes only. |
---|---|
Source |
Derived from a scan of the artwork (creator of this digital version is irrelevant as the copyright in all equivalent images is still held by the same party). Copyright held by the company or the artist. Claimed as fair use regardless. Note: the artist of this work is not credited and this information could not be obtained from other sources. |
Article | |
Portion used |
Cropped portion |
Low resolution? |
Is low and only as much resolution as necessary to identify and show the style of artwork used for the article, not enough to be used for piracy. The fact this is only a portion of the original cover renders it impractical for use in producing a pirated copy of the novel. |
Purpose of use |
Illustrates the article Patricia Holm which provides enough critical commentary for fair use to be applicable. It is an image of a fictional character and displays aspects of the character that are directly referenced within the article in the form of critical commentary. |
Replaceable? |
No free equivalent can equal this image (any would be a derivative of this artwork or similar artworks). The character of Patricia Holm does not exist in real life. The only other alternate would be the uploading of a screen capture from a copyrighted film of an actress playing this role. |
Other information |
Image in this form is already widely distributed to identify the artwork so we degrade no market value by providing it ourselves. |
