Object history
English: Possibly commissioned by Thomas Butts c. 1816-20 but acquired directly from Blake by John Linnell in 1825 for £10; sold from Linnell's estate, Christie's, 15 March 1918, lot 151 (£2205 to the Carfax Gallery acting for T. H. Riches); bequeathed by Riches to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1935 with a life interest to his widow; received by the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1950.

Title: Illustrations to Milton's "Paradise Regained" Origination: William Blake: inventor, delineator, colorist Note: Since the designs were acquired directly from Blake by John Linnell in 1825, it is possible that they were executed at a slightly later date, c. 1820-25. Number of Objects: 12 Object Order: 1-12 Object Size: ranging between 16.4 x 12.9 cm. and 17.3 x 13.9 cm. Number of Leaves: 12 Leaf Size: approximately 19.5 x 15.5 cm. Medium: pen and water color over pencil Support: wove paper Watermark: M © J LAY 1816 Note: The watermark appears only in objects 1, 6, and 11. Penned Numbers: 2, 2-12 Note: The numbers appear below the lower right corner of each design. Objects 1 and 2 are both numbered "2." Frame Lines: 1 Note: Each design is outlined at the margins of the image by pen and ink lines.
