Description

I had never seen the air so clear before. That's the difference between hiking in the summer and hiking in the rest of the year.

Because the summit of Mt San Gorgonio is the highest point in Southern California, you can see pretty much all of Southern California from the top, on a clear day. Sunday morning the air was pretty clear. I have put notes in the photo identifying SoCal landmarks visible from the mountain (you will have to view the photo in its original size to be able to see many of them). San Clemente Island, the most distant object in this photo, is 125 miles away (though one Flickr viewer says the Sierra Nevada, 185 miles away, are visible to the right). Looking the other direction, we could clearly see 11,916 foot Mt Charleston, in Nevada, about 163 miles away.

The camera lens and CCD have limitations; you could see even more, with more clarity, with the naked eye. For example, we could see the towers of downtown Los Angeles, just in front of the Santa Monica Mountains (80 miles away). Until this trip I wouldn't have realized Mt San Gorgonio was visible from downtown LA, but now I suppose it must be, frequently, on clear winter days.
