Finalizando el siglo XIX, la influencia de la arquitectura inglesa llegó a Comillas, como consecuencia de la admiración de la burguesía española hacia el mundo anglosajón. Francisco Hernández Rubio proyectó para el prado de San José el Chalet del Duque de Almodóvar del Río.

Toma su nombre de los famosos “chalets” suizos y sus formas de la admirada arquitectura inglesa, insistiendo en todos los elementos tópicos de estos supuestos estilos rústicos: asimetría, multiplicidad de ejes, labores de madera y ladrillo, etc. Contrastando con el eclecticismo del Palacio de Sobrellano y el modernismo del Capricho de Gaudí.

En la fachada sudeste existe un escudo timbrado por yelmo afrontado con corona de duque y cimera que representa un rey coronado u con cadena la cuello. Lleva en derredor de la tarjeta un adorno de banderitas cargadas de signos o escudetes. El campo es cuartelado y con escuson.
