Summary

Description
English: In this image, taken at 100x magnification on a confocal microscope, a Caenorhabditis elegans PVM mechanosensory neuron is expressing two transgenic fluorescent proteins: mCherry, which is soluble in the cytoplasm and labels the soma and the axon in red, and GFP which localizes to the mitochondria and labels them in green. A dye, 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), labels the nucleus in the neuron and the surrounding nuclei of the hypodermis in blue. Three exophers, large membrane-bound extracellular vesicles, are indicated by white arrows. Exophers are produced by neurons and myocytes across phyla, and represent an exocytic mechanism to maintain homeostasis by ejecting protein aggregates, excess membrane, and damaged organelles from the cell body. Exophers are distinguished from other extracellular vesicles by their distinct mechanism of biogenesis and their large diameter, which can be as large as the cell that extruded it. Exophers may play a role in aggregate spread in human diseases such as Alzheimer's disease or Huntington's disease. Arnold ML, Cooper J, Grant BD, Driscoll M.
