Description
English: The composite ship 'City of Adelaide', 791 tons, after being reduced to a barque.

ON50036, 176.8 x 33.2 x 18.8. Built 1864 (5). W. Pile and Co. Sunderland. Owners: Devitt and Moore, registered London. Usually employed in the South Australian trades and often loaded wool at Port Augusta. Became a Royal Naval hospital hulk, later an accommodation ship and was renamed Carrick from at least 1925. Given by the Royal Navy for use as a club ship by RNR and berthed in Scotland. See Ships of the Royal Navy, Vol. 1 JJ Colledge, David and Charles, 1969.

This image has been digitised by the State Library of South Australia from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
