Summary

Description
English: A schematic design of a PM trap. Charged particles of a single sign of charge are confined in a vacuum inside an electrode structure consisting of a stack of hollow, metal cylinders. A uniform axial magnetic field is applied to inhibit positron motion radially, and voltages are imposed on the end electrodes to prevent particle loss in the magnetic field direction. This is similar to the arrangement in a Penning trap, but with an extended confinement electrode to trap large numbers of particles (e.g., N ≥ 1010).

This physics image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.

It is recommended to name the SVG file “PM Trap Schematic.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
