Summary

Description
English: Styled as he "Switzerland of America" this small town sitting at nearly 8,000 feet (2430 metres) in the Colorado Rockies is surrounded by the stunning San Juan Mountains.

Local attractions near the town include 4x4 adventures, biking, hiking, climbing and in winter, snow sports.

The town itself has several geothermal springs which have been used for an unknown period but at least since the Ute Indians lived here for 100's of years.

Today, all of Main Street is registered as a National Historic District and most of the buildings date back to the late nineteenth century.

Travelling here by road from the South, out of Durango and Silverton - as I did - takes you along the spectacular Highway 550 and Red Mountain Pass (The Million Dollar Highway), regarded as one of the most scenic roads in the USA - and the world. I entirely agree and recommend the journey.

The town has been the backdrop to films, TV shows and commercials, such as True Grit, MacGyver and Over the Top. Commercials for Coors and Chevrolet have also been filmed locally.
