Summary

Description
English: Bound in this Codex legum Langobardorum et capitularia regum Francorum is, along with other text parts, the Origo gentis Langobardorum. The peculiarity of this manuscript is the unique figural illustrations of the history of the Lombards. In the upper part of the image, the god Wotan props himself up in his bed. Frea, who stands at the edge of her husband's bed, points with her left hand to a band of armed men and women of the Winiler people (the earlier name of the Lombards), who like the gods are named by a caption. This scene is the only pictorial representation known to date of the naming of the Lombards. In the lower part of the image is an additional illustration that is of some importance for the formation of the Lombards. The "wise woman" Gambara is seated on a throne in the left half of the image, and before her stand her two sons Ibor and Agio. As in the upper image, these persons are named in captions. Gambara is of twofold importance for the genesis of the Lombards. First, she seeks contact with Freya and asks for her help for her people. Second, the Lombards leave the island of Scadanan and begin their legendary migration under the leadership of Gambara and her sons.
