Description
English: Original description: Independence Rock, Wyoming. Noted landmark on the Oregon Trail, a granite dome rising out of the Sweetwater Plain, 195 feet high and 1500 yards in circumference. Origin of name obscure; Bonneville, in 1832, makes no mention of it, but Parker in 1835 does, as a well known name. It is the inscription rock of the West, carrying the names of many of the early trappers, travelers, and explorers. Fremont painted a large cross on it in 1842. Figure of horseman on summit of rock is Dr. Hayden., 1870
