urethritis the symptoms are a persistent, intense burn-ing, frequent urination with pain, and sometimes a discharge of blood. Vulvitisand vaginitis may be associated with them. In the subacute form the discom-forts may be transitory and not serious. It is important in all cases to examine the urethral secretion microscopicallyfor gonococci, and confirmatory evidence will be gained if the presence of 384 AFFECTIONS OF THE URETHRA AND BEADDER. gonococci in the cervical secretions can be demonstrated. Should they be found in the cervix and not in the urethra the evidence would still be in favor of a gonorrheal urethritis. The urethroscopic examination must be made in every case where the purpose of the examiner is not only to know the nature of the morbid condi-tion, but its gradeand its extent aswell. The diseasedconditions are foundalmost exclusivelyin the mucous andsubmucous tissues,and are more apt tobe localized in theanterior or posteriorportions of the ure-thra than in themiddle.
