Hokusai had a penchant for depicting human figures in a variety of unusual postures. The rock in this print is associated with a famously elegant twelfth-century courtesan from ?iso, named Tora Gozen. It is said that her father prayed to the goddess Benzaiten for a child. Thereafter, Toras rock became a talisman for pregnancy and protection and a landmark for the station at ?iso."
