English: "Built in 1834 the Ohio Penitentiary was the second in the state, and housed both men and women. It had a separate structure for women within the main walls, which operated from 1837-1913. The facility was the state penitently for men starting in 1834 up until it closed in 1984. The building was sold to the City of Columbus in 1995. The site on which it stood is now considered “The Arena district” and is where the Nationwide Arena now stands."
