Morrow 18 Oglethorpe University HISTORICAL SKETCH The historical genesis of Oglethorpe University takes usback to the middle of the eighteenth century when, under theleadership of Presbyterian men, Princeton College wasfounded in New Jersey and rapidly became the institutionlargely patronized by the young men from Presbyterianfamilies all over the world. After a while the long distanceswhich must be traveled by stage or on horseback, suggestedthe building of a similar institution under the auspices ofPresbyterianism in the South.
