English: Office block on Greg Street The original building housed the drawing office and management services of Craven Brothers (Manchester) Ltd.
The firm were makers of massive,made to measure, metal-cutting machines. Here are just a few examples, lathes; grinders; vertical boring mills; turbine gear-tooth cutters; wagon wheel profile lathes and http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/gafas/p4cr42.html. Remarkably most of the details were made on site, from cast-iron bed sections weighing 30 tonnes a piece down to the smallest screws. Time served apprentices received no indentures except for a pat on the back and advised to, "Just tell 'em where you're from lad !" |
