Summary
[edit]Description | Picture of vanessa german's assemblage sculpture Of Thee We Sing (2023) in the plaza of the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in 2023. A large sculpture of the American contralto singer Marian Anderson, comprising a central figure representing Anderson made from blue glass bottles stacked together in the shape of a large skirt, situated on top of a large reflective platform. The singer's face, shown singing in a black and white image, is printed on a reflective cube placed on top of the figure, with more blue glass bottles and a blue glass hand situated on top of the cube; the figure is wearing a blue and silver coat and stretching her arms out as if in mid-song. The platform below the figure is lined on the sides with black and white images of the crowds in attendance at Anderson's 1939 concert in the Lincoln Memorial plaza; dozens of small mirrors in the shape of raised hands are attached to the platform surrounding the figure, interspersed with faux pink and white flowers. The work is surrounded by metal fencing, and the facade of the Lincoln Memorial is visible in the background. |
